First Archaeology Fair October 2015

So in the fall of 2015 we hosted our first Archaeology fair event at TAMUCT! This was in partnership with the archaeologists at Fort Hood which turned out to be something we repeated in 2016, but more on that later. The fair went as planned and was very well attended for a weekday event.

As this was our first fair, I applied for and was awarded a grant from the Council of Texas Archeologists which helped us to be able to get it off the ground. This was really important as we were able to get materials for our children's excavation and rock art activities, print educational materials, and to provide T-shirts for our volunteers. The archaeologists at Fort Hood brought artifacts from their cultural resources department for display, an atlatl and darts for visitors to try out, and also a flintknapper. Even with all the supplies, we also couldn't have done it without our students! Many of the students who volunteered to run our activities were also enrolled in anthropology courses at TAMUCT.
